One Kitten or Two Kittens?

Whether you’re reading this and have already gotten your kitten, or maybe you’re doing a bit of research before making the commitment, there is one thing I’d like you to consider and think about, it’s a big one but it’s something that can make both you and your kitten’s life a whole lot better! Have you ever thought about adopting more than one kitten at the same time, or maybe adopting a friend for your little one at home? I think this is a question we all need to ask ourselves because whether we think it or not, the simple truth is two cats are almost always going to be better than one! Let’s talk about that.
Upon first thought, most people would think that cats are naturally solitary creatures, well in actuality, that is very untrue. Cats are actually in their prime happiness state when they themselves have a furry friend and lifelong companion of their own! From the cat’s ancestors, to stray cats, to cats at home, whatever the case, cats should ideally live with other cats. Realistically in fact with large groups; but that’s a different story, as the general population isn’t going to have the mindset, capacity, and funds to do such a thing! We’ll leave that to stray cats, and wealthy cat ladies who own two mansions on their property. But beside all that, something we realistically can do is adopt two cats, let them have a companion to go through life with. It will make their day to day much more enjoyable and entertaining, and in part will make yours a whole lot easier, because now they’ll have someone their size to get their energy out with!
Some of you reading this who already own a cat may be thinking to themselves, “Oh, but my cat would never get along with another cat, they’d rather be alone!”, this may be due to whatever behaviors they currently exhibit in the household. But I can assure you that the majority of cats would benefit and actually enjoy having a friend around, despite the way they are behaving right now. I’d say 90% of cats are more than willing to have a companion in the house, it’s unlikely your current cat is in that 10% and will absolutely despise a new kitten in the house, and even if that’s the case, there are ways to help them grow closer together. So in my opinion, I’d say, sometimes you just have to take the chance!
By adopting two kittens either from the same litter, or just some short time between each other, then they can grow up together from adolescence into adulthood. People will think, “Wow, that’s twice as much work!”, but in actuality, it’s not, as they’re energies are going to bounce off of one another, leaving you with two peaceful cuddly kittens, so they’re taking out a lot of the work! They will be best of friends their entire life, and you, their human, will get double the fluffy cuteness! By adopting them together, it allows them to explore the boundaries of playing and simply being a kitten, which is all happening at a very young age. Also, all of these aspects and traits will also translate into how they’re ultimately going to socialize with you as well. For example, they will learn from their friend as a young kitten that biting and scratching hard during playtime is a no-no, which in return is going to grant you from these not so good habits that can easily develop with kittens that either don’t get the proper training or don’t have a friend there to tell them off about it. Let them blow off steam with each other and you won’t get randomly bit out of nowhere while sitting on the couch watching a movie, it’s a win-win!
The ideal situation is going to be when you are adopting a new kitten, if you happen to notice they have a best friend or a favorite sibling in there with them that they have already bonded closely with; then taking those two home together will be the best match you can possibly ask for!
Although I say all of this, please do remember it is okay to just have one kitten; if your space, family, or funds don’t allow it, don’t be too down about it, just remember to show your kitten all the love you have! And who knows, maybe one day later down the line, you can bring home another!
